Breviary of Philippe le Bel

before 1296
Manuscript (Ms. lat. 1023), 205 x 135 mm
Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris

This prayer book, which was assembled for a member of the royal household, contains a single miniature, placed between the Calendar and the text. The upper part of the leaf shows the Anointing of David by Samuel and Jesse in front of the gate of Bethlehem; beneath appears the struggle of David and Goliath. It is one of the most significant works of French painting from the closing years of the 13th century and paves the way for Jean Pucelle.
