MASTER of the Legend of Saint Ursula (I)
(active 1480-1500 in Bruges)

Head of Christ

1490s
Oil and gold on oak panel, 43 x 33 cm
Private collection

Images such as this were intended for private devotion in the fifteenth century. The prototype for this type of countenance of Christ was probably a lost work by Jan van Eyck, now only known from early copies dating from 1438 onwards. The Ursula Master used this head again in two panels depicting Angels holding the veil of St Veronica.
