MASTER of the Legend of Saint Ursula (I)
Flemish painter (active 1480-1500 in Bruges)

An immense number of paintings were produced in Bruges in the final quarter of the fifteenth century. Most covered the ground trodden by Memling, though many show the influence of Van der Weyden, Bouts and Van der Goes. There is a fresh but childish narrative manner about them, paralleling to some degree the art of the miniaturist. The two major representatives of this school are the Master of the Ursula Legend and the Master of the Lucy Legend. The main work of the first master - the panels with the Legend of Saint Ursula, the Church and the Synagogue - was received from the Convent of the Augustinian nuns.
