MASTER of Mary of Burgundy
(active 1469-1483 in Ghent)

Book of Hours for Engelbert of Nassau

1470s
Manuscript (Ms. Douce 219-220, 2 volumes), 137 x 97 mm
Bodleian Library, Oxford

This book of hours was made on the order of Engelbert, a high-ranking military man in the Burgundian realm under Philippe le Bel, son of Mary of Burgundy and Emperor Maximilian I, although his arms are overpainted with those of Philippe. The miniatures and the exuberant trompe-l'oeil borders may originate from the Master of Mary of Burgundy.

The picture shows the Annunciation on folio 97v.
