MASTER of Pratovecchio
(active 1435-1455 in Florence)

Pratovecchio Altarpiece: Virgin and St John the Evangelist

c. 1450
Tempera on wood, 57 x 28 cm (each)
National Gallery, London

The picture shows the panels from the pinnacle of the Pratovecchio Altarpiece. For the rhetorical poses of the Virgin and St John, Donatello's bronze doors for the Old Sacristy in San Lorenzo provided the Master of Pratovecchio with the models. In certain respects, these figures are the altarpiece's most extraordinary figures, and they look ahead to the work of Pollaiuolo.
