In 1992, a radical restoration was carried out of the crucifix of the chapter in the Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. The results of the restoration were both exceptional and unforeseen: underneath the nineteenth-century repainting was discovered a crucifix in tempera, attributed to the thirteenth century. Some parts of the work was missing: the whole of the right side of the body of Christ extends beyond the wood of the cross and we have to imagine that the body was painted in a setting that was broader than just that of the cross. This a type derived from central Italy, therefore can be defined as originally Umbro-Tuscan brought to Venice by the Franciscans.
