The groups of Descent from the Cross constitute the most spectacular dramatic setting of Romanesque wooden church furniture. Christ crucified is welcomed by Joseph of Arimathea, accompanied by Nicodemus, the Virgin, St John and the two thieves. Depending on the region, Christ is presented in a position corresponding to different moments in the story. he may be shown still nailed to the cross , with his right hand or both hands already unnailed, or with his body detached from the cross. Many crucifixes exhibited in museums come from scattered groups. The only two groups still intact in Italy are those of Volterra Cathedral and Tivoli Cathedral, dating to the first quarter of the thirteenth century.
