Formerly this panel was attributed to Simon Marmion or his workshop. However, according to recent studies, this attribution cannot be maintained.
The painting illustrates a miraculous event in the life of St Benedict. A young monk who had been sent to fetch water, fell into Lake Subiaco and was at risk of drowning. Instantly sensing this danger, Benedict dispatched another monk to his rescue.
