The inscription at the upper left gives the unknown sitter's age as thirty-four and the date as 1561. The coat-of-arms at right identifies him as a member of the Quaratesi family of Florence, one of the several Florentines who were associated with the court of the Florentine-born regent Catherine de' Medici.
Formerly the painting was attributed to Anthonis Mor van Dashorst.
