This bas-relief symbolic of the signs of the Lion and the Ram is from the south door of the transept of Saint-Sernin, Toulouse. It has been dated, not without much controversy, around 1150. In it one senses a genuine striving after three-dimensionality, and the composition tends to capture a rhythmic feeling. The pose with legs crossed - possibly of Oriental provenance - was submitted to infinite variations in Romanesque sculpture. The proportions of the two female figures are elongated, the bodies are more supple than in the past, and there is even faintly, timidly still, a suggestion of a breeze lifting a bit of the lower edge of the tunic.
