The picture shows a statue from the tomb of St Lazarus.
From the mid-twelfth century, Burgundy occupies an original place between Romanesque and Gothic art. The sculptured tomb of St Lazarus in Autun is an original work, in which Romanesque traditions strongly resist the new Gothic canon. In plan. it reproduced a church in miniature, with transept and apse. Inside it, Lazarus lay in a sarcophagus whose cover was carried by four men. At his feet were the statues of Christ, Peter and Andrew, at his head Mary Magdalene and Martha. The work was probably executed around their known date of the transfer of the relics in 1146-47.
