French ivory-carving had its heyday in the 13th and 14th centuries. Aristocrats and wealthy burghers commissioned diptychs and triptychs decorated with ivory reliefs whose complex compositions featured superbly executed miniature figures and architectural decor. Scenes from the life of the Virgin were favourite subjects; the present triptych shows a depiction of the Virgin and Child with angels.
