Christ as Man of Sorrow below the Cross

1420-40
Fir, 25 x 34 cm
Staatliche Museen, Berlin

The painter of this panel is referred to as the Master of the Presentation.

In the panel of this Austrian anonymous master Christ still seems alive after the Deposition, as if a Man of Sorrows, patiently awaiting burial in the tomb at the far left. Back-to-back, seated on the ground, Mary and John support one another in grief's desolation. An assistant at the Deposition enters the dollhouse-city of Jerusalem.
