Interior of a Dutch Shop Selling Gold and Silver

c. 1660
Oil on panel, 28 x 22 cm
Private collection

Goldsmiths and silversmiths, who had previously worked solely on commission because of the high cost of their material, began producing for shops in the 17th century. This small painting by an anonymous artist shows the saleswoman and a female customer in such a shop.
