Sara de Peyster at the Age of Two and a Half

1631
Oil on canvas, 97 x 61 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

The portrait and its pendant (in the same museum) depict the first two children of nine who were born to Jacques de Peyster (1596-1655), a native of Ghent, who became a banker in Rouen and later in Amsterdam. The ages of the children, Sara and Jacques, were given on the canvas as thirty months and seventeen months, respectively. The provincial style of the portraits is typical of Friesland and West Friesland.
