In the late fifteenth century, with the rapid development in the illustrated printed book came increasing demands for more deluxe editions with leading painters participating more and more in the designing of the woodcuts. An example of the deluxe editions is the allegorical romance in verse, Chevalier delibéré (Resolute Knight), published in Gouda sometime between 1486 and 1490. The picture shows one of the sixteen woodcut illustrations.
