This illustration is taken from a picaresque novel published in Rotterdam in 1655, "Het leven van Gusman d'Alfarache" by Mateo Aléman (1547-1615), a Spanish novelist. Picaresque novel was a popular literary genre originated in Spain during the sixteenth century but quickly spread throughout Europe, including the Netherlands. Picaresque novels were conceived as lengthy, comic texts revolving around the colourful travels and adventures of soldiers of fortune and other rogues.
