Mechelen dolls

1450-1500
Polychrome wood
Museum Hof van Busleyden, Mechelen

The little statues called "Mechelen dolls" own their name due to their doll-like features. One can find these "dolls" among free-standing sculptures and as part of retables. Sober and tasteful clothing is typical of the statues, with their play of about three folds in V-shape.
