Antler Woman

The combination of an antler with a small sculpted figure suspended from chains is called 'Leuchterweibchen' in German. However, it was not restricted to Germany, important specimens of antler chandeliers are also found in the southern Netherlands. The particular Leuchterweibchen shown in the picture has a sculptural style typical of Mechelen. Its primary function is as a heraldic supporter, for she holds a coat of arms bearing a rearing goat.
