UNKNOWN MASTER, German (active 1490s in Nuremberg) |
Portrait of a Man1491Oil on linden panel, 37 x 20 cm Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
|
This portrait derives from a composition developed by Dieric Bouts the Elder in his 1462 Portrait of a Man. The formula circulated through drawings and painted versions in southern Germany. The present work can be connected to Nuremberg through stylistic comparisons with paintings created in Nuremberg. A possible candidate for authorship could be the Nuremberg portrait painter Jakob Elsner (c. 1460-1517).
