As a consequence of iconoclasm and the many wars in the region, very little Upper Rhenish painting has survived. What fragments do remain demonstrate very clearly, however, the important role played by the art of this region in the 14th and 15th centuries. During the first part of the 15th century, in particular, art production would have been given a significant boost by the Councils of Constance and Basel. This panel of known provenance is undoubtedly a work of Upper Rhenish art.
