The backgrounds of medieval paintings can often give us a vivid impression of domestic life in its setting. The pictures may be of biblical subjects but they are set in authentic contemporary surroundings with furnishings often meticulously represented. In the present panel the Virgin is set at a splendid Gothic table; there are a window with small round panes and pewter dishes in a cupboard behind.
