Donor portraits

1569-76
Oil on oak panel, 220 x 92 cm
Residenzmuseum, Celle

The wings of the altarpiece of the Lutheran Schlosskapelle in Celle depicts the donor portraits of Wilhelm the Younger, Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg and his wife Dorothea of Denmark. The portraits belong to the campaign of refurbishment of the chapel carried out between 1565 and 1576, which is still preserved in largely original form. They stand out as stylistically distinct from the rest of the decoration, much of which was painted by Marten de Vos in Antwerp.

From stylistic similarities it is suggested that the wings may have originated in the same workshop as the triptych Christ Blessing, Surrounded by a Donor Family in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
