The city depicted in Christ's orb is Hamburg, shown in a topographically accurate view from the east. This view shows six churches appearing from left to right: (1) Sankt Katharinen, (2) Sankt Nikolai, (3) the Cathedral, (4) Sankt Jacobi, (5) Sankt Petri, and (6) Sankt Johannis. Although renovation and destruction in the past four centuries have greatly altered Hamburg's churchscape, the identification finds confirmation in contemporary depictions.
