Drawing
Fürsten zu Waldburg-Wolfegg, Schloss Wolfegg

From the 12th century to the Industrial Revolution there was a steady improvement in mechanical techniques, but no radical breakthrough. This could not happen until new sources of power were discovered. As long as man had to rely on his own strength, on that of animals, opportunities for progress were limited.

This drawing shows a powder-mill containing an ingenious set of gears worked by hand.
