Protestant Church

c. 1545
Coloured woodcut
Staatliche Museen, Berlin

This woodcut summarizes the tenets of Luther's reforms. In the pulpit, he preaches his message, invoking God the Father, Christ, and the Lamb. Opposite him are the only two sacraments recognized by the Lutheran Church - Baptism and Communion. In the foreground Luther's patron, the Elector John Frederick, piously bears the cross.
