Bernward door (detail)

Cathedral, Hildesheim

The detail shows St Joseph from the Nativity scene.

The figure of St Joseph seems to bend out from the background with a very natural movement, leaning towards the Virgin with pride and admiration. Despite the panel's size, the sculptor has treated the little figure as though it were a large-scale statue in the round, without either neglecting or simplifying any of the details. The supple folds of drapery, the simple and natural gestures, the successful handling of the face, round and full without being too soft, all allow the action its full expressive value.
