Emperor Frederick II is shown as a Roman emperor on this coin of the mid-13th century.

Frederick II was the Holy Roman Emperor 1220-1250. He attempted to revive the imperial ideal and consolidate the Empire. He was a remarkable figure who often shocked his contemporaries.
