Panel of a Diptych

1390s
Carved ivory with traces of paint, 15 x 9 cm
The Hermitage, St. Petersburg

Such diptychs, reproducing in miniature the large altar compositions that adorned medieval cathedrals, served as an aid to prayer in domestic chapels or on journeys. When depicting Gospel events, the Crucifixion in the present case, Gothic ivory-carvers always placed them in an architectural setting.
