UNKNOWN MASTER, Swiss

Portrait of a Man Aged 34

1524
Tempera on wood, 39 x 34 cm
Akademie der bildenden Künste, Vienna

This panel is monogrammed HF and dated 1524. The monogram cannot be conclusively identified. There is a clear artistic link between this portrait and those from the circle of Hans and Ambrosius Holbein who were both working in Basel from about 1515. North Italian influences can also be observed in the Italianate architecture in the background. The presence of a skeleton and the inscription "Betracht das Ende" ("consider the end") referring to the transience of life.
