The Lamentation of Christ

1450-1500
Egg tempera on wood, 43 x 109 cm
Ikonen-Museum, Recklinghausen

The picture shows the front side of an icon painted on both sides. Its narrow horizontal format indicates that it was originally attached above the royal doors of an iconostasis. The front side represents the Lamentation of Christ while the reverse shows Christ between the Mother of God and the martyr Catherine.
