Theodorus Schrevelius was a Dutch writer and headmaster. After studying in Leiden with a grant from the town of Haarlem, in 1597 he began teaching at the prestigious Latin school in his home town, Haarlem, of which he later became headmaster. Here he started work on translating Ovid. Although he was a member of good standing of the Reformed church, he was a Remonstrant sympathizer.
The present engraving is after a portrait by Frans Hals. The inscription reads: Theodorus Schrevelius gymnasiarcha Harlemensis.
