MICHELANGELO Buonarroti
(b. 1475, Caprese, d. 1564, Roma)

Six Figures in Startled Postures (recto)

1532-34
Red chalk, 110 x 192 mm
Teylers Museum, Haarlem

The figures on this sheet are most probably preparatory studies by Michelangelo for the bottom half of the drawing The Fall of Phaethon, which Michelangelo dedicated to his friend Tommaso de' Cavalieri.

The verso of the sheet contains a red chalk drawing of a headless figure running toward the right.
