MICHELANGELO Buonarroti
(b. 1475, Caprese, d. 1564, Roma)

Head of a Woman (recto)

1540-43
Black chalk, 212 x 142 mm
Royal Collection, Windsor

This drawing on the recto, depicting a youthful head, slightly turned to the right with eyes cast down and a pensive, introspective expression, is most likely a study for a Madonna and Child. On the verso of the sheet a faint portrait can be seen, probably the same female head as on the recto.
