MICHELANGELO Buonarroti

Study of an Inclined Head

1529-30
Red chalk, 355 x 270 mm
Casa Buonarroti, Florence

This beautiful head study is a preliminary drawing for the head of Leda in the painting Leda and the Swan, which the artist created for Alfonso I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara. Michelangelo drew the profile study after a living male model wearing a tight-fitting workshop cap. Despite studying the head on a living model, the artist gives it an idealised appearance.
