Model for the façade of San Lorenzo, Florence

1517
Wood, 210 x 280 cm
Casa Buonarroti, Florence

Michelangelo reappeared in Florence in 1516 to carry out an important commission, Pope Leo X's project for a façade for San Lorenzo in Florence. He worked for three years on plans for the façade, which he intended, in his own words, to be a mirror of architecture and sculpture of all Italy." However, in March 1520 the contract for the façade was annulled to Michelangelo's indignation. Although we know too little about the final projected appearance of the façade, the wooden model built to Michelangelo's specifications survives.
