Nicolas Mignard spent most of his active life at Avignon. He has been completely overshadowed by his younger brother Pierre but was in fact an original artist who learnt much from what he saw in Rome - particularly from the work of Lanfranco - and painted a number of remarkable altarpieces in in a near-Baroque style for Avignon and other towns in Provence.
