MOLENAER, Jan Miense
(b. ca. 1610, Haarlem, d. 1668, Haarlem)

The Duet (detail)

1635-36
Oil on panel
Private collection

The figures in this painting have been identified as Molenaer himself, and Judith Leyster, a fellow painter from Haarlem, whom he married in June 1636. The young man has been identified as Molenaer himself based on comparison to his self-portraits such at the Self-Portrait with Family Members. With her heart-shaped face, wide forehead and small rounded nose, the young woman is strikingly similar to Leyster's Self-Portrait of circa 1632-33, in the National Gallery of Art, Washington
