In 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War, Monet and his family settled in London. The city offered several new motifs for Monet's painting, however, he produced only a few pictures on the River Thames, the Green Park, and the Hyde Park. In the present painting he shows the misty atmosphere of the capital on a spring day, with the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Bridge in the background.
