MONET, Claude
(b. 1840, Paris, d. 1926, Giverny)

Waterloo Bridge

1903
Oil on canvas, 64 x 101 cm
The Hermitage, St. Petersburg

The several journeys that Monet made to London from 1899 to 1901 produced an enormous series of views of the river Thames, predominantly in foggy weather. Looking out his windows at the Savoy, where he usually stayed, the artist began one canvas after another, following the changing light. The majority of the paintings were completed at Giverny, after his return to France.
