NANNI DI BARTOLO
(active 1419-1435)

Brenzoni Monument

c. 1426
Marble
San Fermo Maggiore, Verona

Nanni di Bartolo's only certain work in north Italy is the signed Brenzoni monument in San Fermo, Verona. The harmonious relationship between Nanni's sculpted scene of the Resurrection of Christ and Pisanello's fresco of the Annunciation above it gives the impression that the two artists formed a well-integrated team. It seems probable that Nanni designed the highly pictorial scene, based on Ghiberti's relief of the same subject on the north doors of the Florentine Baptistery, but left part of the execution to an assistant.
