NANNI DI BARTOLO
(active 1419-1435)

Two Small Prophets

c. 1410
Marble
Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Florence

The picture shows two small prophets by Nanni di Bartolo flanking a statue of Christ from the 1350s by Francesco Talenti. The three statues came from the Campanile.

The attribution to Nanni of two small prophets, originally on pinnacles flanking the door of the campanile, has been questioned. These figures, with their thickly curled hair and beards, undulating borders to their cloaks, hooked folds in their robes and exaggerated curvature of their posture, resemble the figure style of Ghiberti's contemporary relief panels on the north door of the Baptistery.
