NASMYTH, Scottish family of painters

Michael Naesmyth was the head of a family firm of architect–builders. With his father he built many Edinburgh houses, notably in St Andrew Square and George Square. Alexander Nasmyth was his second son and the most notable artist of the family. He was the father of 11 children, among whom Patrick Nasmyth was the best-known painter. Alexander's fourth son, James, also painted but was best known for his invention of the steam hammer.
