Teatro San Carlo, Naples

The Neoclassical façade of the Teatro San Carlo was grafted 1810-11 on the building erected in 1737 by Giovanni Antonio Medrano (born 1703). An Ionic colonnade is inserted like a decorative strip between closed corner blocks which continue upwards as pylons. After the Baroque theatre burnt down in 1818, Niccolini, who also worked as a stage designer, undertook the reconstruction himself.
