Several variants of this composition were produced by Palmezzano and his workshop. Palmezzano worked mainly in Forlí and he was not touched by the innovations of the Cinquecento; he continued the Quattrocento traditions of painters of Padua, Venice and Ferrara.
The painting is signed on the cartellino lower right: "Marcus palmezanus foroloviensis faciebat MCCCCC9".
