The Dead Christ

1500-10
Tempera and oil on wood, 61 x 51 cm
Christian Museum, Esztergom

This painting belongs to the type "Imago Pietatis" which was the dead Christ sits (or stands) on his tomb alone or with John the Evangelist, Mary or other figure. These paintings were usually intended for private devotion.

The present painting has the same composition as Perugino's Dead Christ in the The Clark Art Institute, Williamstown. However, the details reflect a different painting style.

The attribution to Panetti is not certain.
