This is an example of painted enamel grisaille in which the work on the white enamel before firing allows to render volumes. The counter-enamel is colourless glass called flux. It is probably a decorative item meant to be mounted in paneling. The enameller copied the print of the Cutlass Battle by Marco Dente, a pupil of Marcantonio Raimondi, after Giulio Romano.
