The Glory of St Dominic

1727
Oil on canvas, 780 x 600 cm
Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Venice

In eighteenth-century ceiling decorations, occasionally oil paintings were made to look like frescoes. Piazzetta did not work in fresco, his ceiling in the St Dominic Chapel at Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, which depicts the saint in glory above the stone vault of the chapel, was painted in oil on canvas. Several Dominican monks are seen looming up above the painted rim of the simulated opening, which is emphasized by the trompe-l'oeil motif of a flowerpot.
