Three centuries later, just before the battle of Ponte Milvio against Maxentius, Emperor Constantine (who took up a position with his army next to the river) was awakened by an angel, who told him to look up at the sky. There he saw a glowing cross circled by the words 'in hoc signo vinces.' The next morning he had a replica of the cross made and carried it before him into the battle, in which he was victorious.
