The Duke and Duchess stand out against the background of the Montefeltro hills, which is continued across the rear of the two wood panels showing allegorically the triumphs of the lords of Urbino. Piero's mastery of depth and volume, as he daringly places the Duke above what should be a cliff top overlooking the distant river, is brilliantly displayed. The Duke is painted without grandeur but with a quiet humanity, unusually in profile (he had lost one eye). The brushwork is executed with painstaking detail, showing perhaps the influence of Flemish art.
